Was it a catch if he bobbled it going to the ground?

The rule

Under NFL Rule 8-1 (Completed Catch), a receiver completes a catch by securing control of the ball, getting both feet (or another body part) down in bounds, and holding the ball long enough to perform an act common to the game. The key wrinkle: if the receiver is going to the ground during the catch, they must maintain control through contact with the ground. A bobble as they land is an incomplete pass.

Is this black-and-white or a judgment call?

Both. The rule is clear, but whether the receiver actually lost control on the ground is a judgment the officials make in real time — and replay only overturns the call on field with clear and obvious evidence.

At full speed, a hand slipping under the ball on the turf is almost impossible to see. The crew rules what they see live; replay exists precisely because this one is so hard in real time. No shame in the call either way.
